This season’s July showcase in the Harbour House lobby is Stefanie Denz, exhibiting numerous paintings from her new series using layered materials: mylar, plastic, mesh and wood. Some paintings are inspired by scenes from 1970s New German Cinema director Rainer Fassbinder’s movies. Most of his films had female protagonists and his actresses; Hannah Schygulla, Rosel Zech and Barbara Sukowa were key collaborators in developing dramas depicting their own demise. The glamourous Hollywood style camera work exemplifies the truth of the women’s compromised position in society, which Fassbinder associated with fascist Germany and capitalism. Paintings below the outer wrapped (and painted) layer glimmer through like an original script that carries on as we read the surface.
Also exhibited are paintings of traveling themes including night street scenes, and being on the ferry. These too, have layers of imagery giving a sense of the variety of experiences a given moment can offer.
Stefanie Denz was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley. She received her MFA on full scholarship, from the University of Auckland, NZ,, in 1989. On return to Canada she and her husband moved to Saltspring Island finding a vibrant artistic community there. Over the years children, family and the complexity of relationships bloomed in the dreamlike and architecturally rich themes in Stefanie’s narratives;’I find images and things that reflect my thoughts and feelings about the world around me. I see an interaction between inner and outer worlds of my subjects and materials. It is my greatest hope that people will find comfort and stimulation as I do in my discovering.’ An enduring topic for her is the identity of female shaped by contexts historical and geographical, how that has changed or not, and the individuals participating in this exchange.
Though Stefanie mainly paints she also makes installations and choreographs movement pieces. She has been giving drawing and painting workshops for over 15 years. She has exhibited in the US and Germany as well as Canada, and most recently is attending her second residency in Berlin this summer. Stefanie’s work can be seen in Winchester Galleries, Victoria, Pod Gallery Saltsprinfg Is., and in her studio. Visit her website wwwstefaniedenz.ca
